Tyranny of Dragons - Session 3

Tyranny of Dragons - Session 3

When we last left off, the characters had just found a hoard of potentially magic items in the Old Tunnel leading out of the keep in Greenest. Deciding not to identify them right away, and proceeding to save the mill, the party went to exit the tunnel. The lock was badly corroded and even with the key, took some doing to open. But they did manage to get it open quietly.

As they were exiting the tunnel, however, the characters spotted a group of raiders patrolling down the river toward them. Acting quickly, the characters moved back into the tunnel, hiding. After waiting for the threat to pass, the group proceeded after the raiders to the west, toward the mill. Because they used the stream to navigate through the town, the group had advantage on their stealth checks and were able to stay quiet through their journey.

Arriving at the mill, the characters encountered a small group of raiders with torches and a spell casting cultist shooting jets of flame at the mill. It looked like they were just toying with it though, not seriously trying to catch the building on fire. After deciding to just rush the group, with Duckie naturally going around to flank, the raiders were quickly dispatched. They captured the spell caster, a female human with a small scar on her chin. She didn't say much, but the group bound her, thinking to take her back to the keep as their prisoner for Governor Nighthill.

They wandered inside the mill to check on it while waiting for the reinforcements to arrive, but rather than the quiet interior they expected, they found an ambush of cult members and heavy mercenary raiders. The surprise round of combat was nearly devastating to the characters at first level, but they managed to hold their own through the fight. Lou dredged up the potion that was formerly a healing potion, but has since turned to a clear liquid thanks to a bout of wild magic from Moki in session 1, throwing it to Thamior, but it went unused.

Duckie made some crucial attacks from outside while babysitting their prisoner and by the end of the combat, the characters had two more captives: a mercenary and a cultist. They tried to interrogate the spell casting cultist, with limited success until they found a silver ring with a dragon symbol on the spell caster. It was then that Duckie began speaking in Draconic to the spell caster, convincing her that she was a member of the cult, however upon being challenged to "speak the words," she couldn't come up with anything. But I was impressed with her reasoning for not knowing "the words" (and she rolled great on her deception check), and so managed to keep a rapport with her anyway. After the reinforcements arrived, the characters brought their prisoners back to the keep to be interrogated.

Once there, they found out from the prisoners that the raiders had a camp in the Greenfields somewhere to the south east, and that they were gathering a great treasure hoard that will usher in the reign of the Queen of Dragons. In addition, they found that the cult has a clutch of dragon eggs under heavy guard in a cave at the camp.

Satisfied with the gathered information, the players ascended to the top of the keep to check out what was going on in the town. From behind them, silent as a shadow, the blue dragon swept over the keep, breathing down lighting onto the defenders, killing four of them and wounding three more. And that's where we ended session 3.
